Blaq Poet - Rewind (Deja Screw) (2006)

Brand Nubian - One For All (1990)

Brand Nubian's 1990 debut album. It's got a nice jazzy feel, not quite sure if they were with the Native Tongues but it's got a vibe similar to Tribe and De La albums of the time. Grand Puba, Sadat X and Lord Jamar have excellent styles on this album, real smooth delivery. My favorite songs "Slow Down", but they're all great.

Derek and the Dominos - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970)

I'm sure you have all heard of the musician named "Eric Clapton" and if you haven't you must live a life entirely sheltered from rock music. He is one of the greatest guitarists ever, ranking up there with Hendrix and B.B. King. Well in the late 60s Clapton developed a love for one of his best friend's wives, Patti Boyd, who was married to George Harrison of the Beatles. He got severely depressed, became a heroin addict, the works. Out of this misery he made one of the best rock albums ever in Layla. He teamed up with Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers, and made this blues-rock masterpiece. I listen to this album accompanied with alcohol when women treat me wrong, as which usually happens. "Layla" is easily one of the greatest rock songs ever, not even exaggerating. Download this.
  1. "I Looked Away" (Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock) – 3:05
  2. "Bell Bottom Blues" (Clapton) – 5:02
  3. "Keep on Growing" (Clapton, Whitlock) – 6:21
  4. "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" (Jimmie Cox) – 4:57
  5. "I Am Yours" (Clapton, Nezami) – 3:34
  6. "Anyday" (Clapton, Whitlock) – 6:35
  7. "Key to the Highway" (Charles Segar, Willie Broonzy) – 9:40
  8. "Tell the Truth" (Clapton, Whitlock) – 6:39
  9. "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" (Clapton, Whitlock) – 4:41
  10. "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" (Billy Myles) – 6:52
  11. "Little Wing" (Jimi Hendrix) – 5:33
  12. "It's Too Late" (Chuck Willis) – 3:47
  13. "Layla" (Clapton, Jim Gordon) – 7:05
  14. "Thorn Tree in the Garden" (Whitlock) – 2:53

Temple of the Dog (1991)

In 1990, Andrew Wood of Seattle grunge band Mother Love Bone died of a heroin overdose. His roommate, lead singer of Soundgarden, Chris Cornell, took his drummer Matt Cameron to the remaining members of Mother Love Bone in discussion of a tribute album to the late musician. The two members of Mother Love Bone, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, were already in talks with Mike McReady and Eddie Veddar on a project which the following year would turn into Pearl Jam. For one album, this mix of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam teamed up into a grunge supergroup for Temple of the Dog. This is a classic grunge album and the duet of Vedder and Cornell on Hunger Strike is orgasmic.

  10. "All Night Thing" – 3:52

My favorite band at the moment. 80's R&B/Funk. Lot of classics/sampled songs.

Sun Ra - Lanquidity (1978)

Sun Ra was a jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his "cosmic philosophy", musical compositions and performances. Sun Ra's music ranged from keyboard solos to big bands of over 30 musicians; his music touched on virtually the entire history of jazz, from ragtime to swing music, from bebop to free jazz; he was also a pioneer of electronic music, space music, and free improvisation, and was one of the first musicians, regardless of genre, to make extensive use of electronic keyboards.

Ra was a master at twisting known musical idioms into his idiosyncratic vision, and Lanquidity proves to be a stirring, mesmerizing example of this vision. The music leads us in an unsettling direction, to a secret world where the lumbering grooves at first seduce with their simplicity, then intoxicate with their richness, until finally the darker sound textures overtake you and drop you in a place you had not imagined before.

1. "Lanquidity"
2. "Where Pathways Meet"
3. "That's How I Feel"
4. Twin Stars of Thence"
5. "There Are Other Worlds (They Have Not Told You Of)"

Nonfiktion - Creative Differences

This classic Sacramento album, is a collaboration between rappers Gangsta Dre and Young Jayda. Originally released in 1996 it went out of print soon after, re-released in 1998 on Black Market Records only to go out of print a second time. One of my favorite albums out of Sacramento. Fans of Brotha Lynch will not be dissapointed, though this is not on the same siccness that Lynch comes with.

Stone Temple Pilots - Core (1992)

Jigga already posted one classic grunge album released on September 29, 1992, Dirt by Alice in Chains. Core was Stone Temple Pilots debut album and a bit different in style than Dirt, though a landmark album of the grunge rock period. The album has a generally hard sound to it, but select track such as "Creep" and "Plush" go for an easier sound. "Creep" is easily one of my favorite rock songs ever, and a top 10 from the 1990s alternative scene. They really changed their style up after this album and got way more experimental, but this is a great starting point for STP.

1. "Dead & Bloated" 5:10
2. "Sex Type Thing" 3:36
3. "Wicked Garden" 4:05
4. "No Memory" 1:20
5. "Sin" 6:05
6. "Naked Sunday" 3:50
7. "Creep" 5:33
8. "Piece of Pie" 5:24
9. "Plush" 5:13
10. "Wet My Bed" 1:36
11. "Crackerman" 3:13

Daz Dillinger - Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back (1998)

A west coast classic, Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back is the debut album from Daz Dillinger. Daz was one of the last remaining artists on Death Row after its collapse in '96. The album was also the last Death Row album to feature any kind of G-Funk production, the style which initially made Death Row famous. Since Daz was one of the last of a dying breed, he largely moved on to different techniques after this album, this could be considered the last hallmark of the musical trend.
