The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967)

Few rock albums are as important as The Velvet Underground & Nico, and fewer still have lost so little of their power to surprise and intrigue more than 40 years after first hitting the racks. Acceptance as a 'classic' hasn't diminished its awesome power to shock and provoke one jot. A monument to the evil that men (and women) do. It may change your life, or may not, but I guarantee you'll hear music differently after listening to it. Music does not get any more essential than this. Genres experimented with include dreamy pop, garage rock, stripped-down R&B, and understated love songs.
